Chapter 5
Cash was shaking as he fought for control. His wolf urged him to mate with Lex before he could run away from them again, but Lex looked scared, wounded, and vulnerable, and Cash couldnât handle it. His Lex should be smiling.
He wrapped his arms tighter around him. âIâd never hurt you.â
âYou already have. You hurt me more than anyone else ever has.â
Cash flinched as if Lex had hit him. âI never meant to hurt you. I searched for you.â
âI needed you. My world fell apart, and I needed you to come with me, but you didnât show.â Lex pushed at him to be let free, but Cash tightened his hold instead.
âI wanted to come, Lex. I wanted to run away with you, but when I fought Dadâ¦When I won, I took over his position in the pack. I canât leave. I have to stay in Warwood.â
âAnd I have a life back in Cottleway.â
The pain. For a moment, Cash believed he was having a heart attack, but it was only his mate rejecting him. He wouldnât die. He would live an empty hollow life, but he wouldnât die. He wished he would die. The whine wouldnât be stopped. Tears burned his eyes, but he blinked fast not to let them spill over. âCan I at least call you?â
The way Lex watched him made him want to hide.
âIâ¦ehâ¦I guess.â
Cash nodded and stepped away. He couldnâtâLex was leaving. Was this how heâd felt when Cash hadnât shown at the gas station? Heâd bear this pain. It would even the scales. âIâll call Arric.â
It was as if he was watching himself from above when he went into the bedroom to make the call. He spoke, but he couldnât hear himself. What Arric said when he picked up, he didnât know, but it didnât take long before there was a knock on the door.
Cash opened, and Arric gave him one look before the smile on his lips melted away and was replaced by worry. âAre you okay?â
âLex wants to leave.â
Arricâs eyes widened at the same time as Lex appeared behind Cash.
âFuck.â It was a low mutter, and Cash hoped it was too low for Lex to hear, but he wasnât sure. He always found it hard to judge with humans.
When Arric followed it up with a louder, growlier, âFuck.â Cash winced. No way Lex couldâve missed it the second time.
âYeah.â Cash slumped his shoulders, but fought to keep calm, and not show any emotions.
Samus chose that moment to tumble out of the woods, followed by Gordon in wolf form. Cash growled.
âSorry.â Samus held his eyes glued to the ground. âArric said to come help pull the car free. I tried telling Gordon to go away and not follow, butâ¦â Gordon was more dominant and had ignored Samus. He didnât need to say the words out loud.
Cash had had it with Gordon. The limit was reached before today, but now he wanted to beat the ever-living shit out of him. Gordon was forgetting his place. He might ignore Samus, but he did not trot up to Cashâs house uninvited.
